Marcus Kucey Jones was born in Birmingham, England in 1966. He
studied fine art and discovered his love of sculpture at the Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating in 1992 with a BFA
in Sculpture and a minor in Art History. In 1995, Jones decided
to hone his stone carving skills during an independent study in
marble in Pietra Santa, Italy. His work is widely collected;
residing in both public and private collections across North
America and Europe.
"There is a romantic notion to carving stone. Its weight, its density, and its timeless quality are all aspects which inspire me while I am carving. I have always loved cutting into a quarried block of stone...measuring...calculating the form within. The romantic aspect of this process has led to certain poetic narrative within my work. While my work may best be described as representational, the works are not meant to merely mimic the life model but are intended to transcend the conceptual genre as well. I have always loved classical sculpture, but this type of art utilizes depictions of the human figure to draw its power while in my own work there is a clear absence of the figure. The figure is portrayed instead through representations of objects related to the figure. Within this absence there is a presence."
