How do you clean a Straw Grade8 Dress Hat?
I don’t know whether to clean it with water, without water, solvent, sponge, soft cloth. It’s a good hat and I’ve had it for about 5 years, however, on the underside there are some areas that need cleaned.
You can stick it into a bag with about 1/2-1 cup salt and shake shake shake. Takes dirt and debris away harmlessly. Also works for fake silk, plastic or fabric plants and flowers. If you are talking about sweat stains then you can’t clean it cause liquid will cause it to mold.

If it is good quality and well-woven or stitched together, I’d swish it in warm soapy water. If it were still dirty in places, I’d gently brush the spots with warm soapy water & rinse. Then let it air dry. If it looks like it is losing a bit of its shape, loosely pack the crown with tissue paper in the correct shape. If it does lose shape easily, it was cheap straw, or you soaked it instead of swishing it. It will not mold or mildew unless it stays wet for a while in a warm place. Mold doesn’t generally grow in the hour or so it will take to dry a swished hat.
If your hat is only collecting dust, a dry sponge may work on it. You can get those from commercial cleaning supply places–actually, even places like Wal-Mart are starting to carry small dry sponges. Use it like an eraser, brushing gently with it.
Straw was used for many, many years to roof houses, and straw roofs would last as much as 90 years, so it is a durable product if not bent or crushed.
BTW, I’ve done interior decorating, and washed many artificial flowers in the bath tub. Only ones with bare wire in the petals can not be washed because the wire will rust and stain the flowers. Cheap silk flowers will fray at the edges if you wash them too vigorously.
