How do you shrink a fitted hat? Would shrinking the hat make it smell or make the color fade?

its a fitted, flat-billed, black hat, MLB. the hat is a little bigger than i want it and i cant return it.

It usually shrinks when you put it in the washer and wash it for a while. It will only smell like laundry detergent afterwards. It usually depends if the color’s going to fade, but usually not.
