I’m in my early 20s, and I’m looking to buy a (western) black felt hat. I’d appreciate it if those of you with more experience in this can tell me what’s fashionable these days.

a good old George Strait stetson is still the best but, only buy from a hat shop that shapes it to your face. they will reshape for free forever. the height of the hat and the brim size can make or break your look. my personal choices are to stay away from that curled up Toby Keith look. It looks sloppy. My preference is not too tall with a wide brim – shaped for your face- make sure the salesperson is experienced and try on as many as you can. oh and get used to wearing it, so you don’t whack your lady with it when you are dancing.
i need to know so i can order one on sheplers online. also tell me which type of cowboy hat you think is more comfortable if not felt or straw. THX.
i would say felt, straw can poke u really bad if one strand gets out of place… but it really depends on what is more comfy for u.

Has a small hole in left ear,maybe for tag. Do not think steiff, tag is in right ear for them.

Do not use felt for a hat like this.. it will tend to disintegrate under the stress of wearing, and the patterns I’ve given you are all designed for stretch knit fabric, with the stretch going around the hem. If the reason you want to use felt is because it doesn’t ravel, you’re in for a treat — neither do the polyester fleeces like Polartec — which is what the sample hat was made of, with felt appliques.
take to a cleaners that has fur storage they usually do cleaning as well.

usually when it dries, it pulls off.
You could try trimming it off gently.

My daughter is a sophmore in high school and is on her school’s drill team. They wear a white felt hat for games. As you can imaging the white hat is in need of a cleaning.

How do you put colour back into an old faded black felt hat, I love it , it has good memories but it’s a patchy grey colour so I rarely wear it anymore.
Has anyone got any ideas on simple, inexpensive, useful ways to make it black again?
It does have a ribbon stitched around the brim that I’d rather not have to take off if it can be helped.
