Those of you that show western, how do you clean your show hats (felt) after shows? I can take mine to the tack shop to be cleaned/re-shaped, and do, but just for a basic cleaning after a show, what do you do to get the dust off and keep the hat looking good? Our open show season just started, which means we’ll be showing every other weekend just about. The arena we show in the most is extremely dusty, and my hat looks like it’s tan instead of black. Before big shows, or every so often, it’s not a big deal to get it professionally cleaned and re-shaped as needed. But I don’t want to have to do that after/before every open show every other weekend. I’ve been just brushing/dusting it off, but if there’s a better way to do it that keeps it looking good and doesn’t ruin the shape of it, please share .
They steam it to give it the proper shape, so don’t worry, I wouldn’t steam it myself–when it loses its shape I’ll bring it back to be professionally reshaped. I’m mostly concerned about the dust and was hoping there was a product that would be better than just brushing it off but wouldn’t damage the hat. My mom has a hat brush like someone posted so I’ll try that–I forgot about a lint roller, those work pretty well too. Thanks for the ideas.

Ugh..i go through the same thing during shows, Its a pain! Besides getting it steamed before big shows, I use this sponge I get at my tackstore..you sweep it on the opposite direction, kinda hard and it workds pretty good on lifting dust and hair off. Also I have seen some people using sham wow type of clothes.
heres a link to the sponge:
heres a brush that ive seen some people use (i never have)
http://www.sstack.com/apparelboots_western-apparel_hatscarriers/m-f-brim-brush/

hope this helps! Good luck at all the shows )

Yes, I do feel religious people are wasting their lives. Just think how much better the world could be if we invested all that time, energy and money in good works instead, like education, medicine, fighting poverty and inequality.

Steaming a felt hat will hurt it’s shape. When people make felt hats they make them maliable by using steam.
I’m not sure why you want to steam it? If you want it cleaned take it to someone who specializes in that.

SUPER GLUE GEL will work for a tear. For a hole, scrape some the material from inside the hat and use it to fill in the hole. Hold a small piece of cloth over the hole from inside. On the out side apply the glue and add the lose material to fill in. Good Luck

Get a hat brush and brush any exccess dirt off of it. Then try some steam. Be careful not to mis shape it, but the steam will loosen any other dirt and soil off and you should be able to brush it off.
I always rolled my hats differently. I have different roles for different hats. don’t think there is any specific meaning to it. Just what I like.
Steam is the best way but you have to work slow and don’t overdo it or you will damage the felt. Just a little at a time and then let it sit and then go back to it.
